Encaustic painting is painting with beeswax; it is beautiful, luminous and has seemingly endless possibilities for artistic expression. Learn to use this natural and wonderful smelling medium in a wide variety of techniques. This workshop is both hands on and lecture; it will cover encaustic painting supplies, equipment, set up and safety. Techniques will include adding pigment to the wax, applying and fusing to a wood panel, layering collage and other materials, combining encaustic with oil painting, creating a variety of textures and more. Each participant will leave with at least two small encaustic paintings and/or collages on wood panel. This workshop is an introduction to encaustic painting and does not include use of a blowtorch. It is intended for participants with basic painting experience who are comfortable exploring with their chosen visual imagery independently.

Lisa Ostapinski is an encaustic painter who has been working with beeswax for over 20 years. She has experimented with most encaustic techniques and has a wealth of information to share about this incredibly versatile medium. Lisa will provide all materials but participants are encouraged to bring items to incorporate into their pieces such as photos, beads/beadwork, dried leaves/flowers, fabric and other collage materials.
