Hand Felting Collars, or small scarves is a great class for beginners as students will leave with a piece they can wear, as well as new skills in felting. In this class students will learn the basics of how to lay out wool for felting, about shrinkage and creating patterns, as well as about the wet felting process using soap and agitation. Four ounces of 100% merino wool roving and silk will be supplied to each student to create their collar as well as soap, plastic, and pvc pipe – all supplies used for felting. It’s a good idea to bring a small bath towel and a plastic bag to class.

Kim Nelson works most often currently with felt, indigo dye and ceramics. She teaches felting and indigo dyeing from her home studio, Raina’s Textile House in South Berkeley and works in the Berkeley Potter’s Studio off of Gilman. Kim studied felting for years with Claudia Hoffberg at the Deep Color Studio in Kensington, and now makes hats, shawls, and gloves, as well as upholstery for chairs, wallets, bags and paintings. Before teaching felting Kim taught incarcerated youth creative writing for many years. She can be found at Raina’s Textile House on Facebook, Instagram and Etsy as well as HERE
